The day after Christmas

This morning I woke up early.. meaning around 8 (lovely late for my usual time, but early compared to the fact that I have nothing to do today and because Bekah sleeps till at least 9:30).
I read the scriptures from my One year bible and shared them with Susan.

Then for another 30 minutes I had a special time looking through an electronic version of an album with pictures of my grandma that my family made for my granddad this Christmas.
I saw some pictures I'd never seen before, which was very special for me. Some old ones of my grandparents, when they were only about 5 years older than me, and then some pictures of me as a baby in my grandma's arms or me as a 4 year old sitting in the kitchen with my grandma, back in the days when she lived in Denmark.

And I got to cherish old memories from the summerhouse in Gilleleje (the country side in Denmark), festive gatherings in Denmark like my confirmation, and good times from Portugal almost endless years in a row! ;) Good memories. Which is what I see it as now - just good memories. Somehow it makes more sense now, and whenever I think of my grandma I think of all the good memories.
Because none of those have been lost.

By the time Bekah woke up, around 9:30, I was starving.. so I made breakfast in bed for us. Fried eggs, toast (home baked rolls), yogurt and Christmas tea.
I laughed because it suddenly felt like we were an old married couple, I said to Bekah.. but she said ".. or just two really good friends".
I agreed on that. <3

How special it is to have this time with a friend like her.

After breakfast we had a walk outside in the snow. Today the cold wasn't killing our bones.. it was possible to walk outside for 20 minutes, without shivering. It was cool and fresh. We walked to the main st. of her small town. .. Which is in fact called 'Main st.'. Very small town like..! And the street has one car passing by every 5 minutes.. probably also has something to do with the fact that it's the day after Christmas, so people are either away or recovering from the Christmas dinner. This is perfect for me now though.

One of the most beautiful skies on this trip

Another nativity, by Main st.!

The store we walked to was one I have been looking far after, every time we passed it in the car.. it is this cute little shop with Christmas ornaments and bows hanging over the windows and over the door, and through the window you can see trinkets, toys, sculptures and thingamabobs in all sizes, colors and shapes - the kind of store you just go in to explore and fiddle in.

As we were walking around in the shop looking I saw a pumpkin pie on a desk, and I quietly gazed and pointed at it .. I thought - how lucky the people who are working here get this for their afternoon tea!.. but even before Bekah noticed what I was pointing at, one of the men who worked in the shop came out and asked if we needed help.. and then he said "Oh, by the way, help yourselves to some pumpkin pie and coffee."
Wow! How peculiar.. this was kind of like the time a few weeks ago when I pointed at a lady's gingerbread house in the subway, and the second after I'd gazed at it, she turned around and asked "Do you want it?"!

Funny thing about this happening though, is that me and Bekah have been talking about pumpkin pie, ever since she got a smelly candle with that scent from me for Christmas. We both love pumpkin pie, and have been craving for it.. but we have been so full from other foods and candy.. so we haven't wanted to light the candle yet.. we thought it would make us throw up on top of all that other food!

At 12 this afternoon, all of us girls went ice skating (that is me, Bekah, her sisters Sarah and Lucy and their Korean exchange student Donghee). Bekah was driving - pretty cool (!).. but she thought I was funny thinking it was weird, but cool seeing her drive because she's had her license for 4 years!.. I just don't ever see myself getting one.. and now that I live on Manhattan, I won't need it!

Me and Bekah were slow at getting on the ice, because we hadn't been skating for 2 years or so! But we stayed for a couple of hours - with a break in between warming up with hot chocolate by a fire inside - and by the end we were almost flying around on the ice. We skated backwards, sitting, on one leg, together with crossed arms (like the quartet dance in Swan lake) .. and neither of us fell once!

We all had so much fun. They are all such good and warmhearted friends, that they are always wonderful to be around.
Bekah and I had a great talk, just floating seemingly on the ice round and round in circles.. round and round our concerns in life. We learn something new from each other every day, which I really cherish.

I just remembered my best friend, who is now in California - I used to have a long phone call with her once a week back home .. it was our must to be able to go on for the next school week. Now we haven't found the time to talk like that more than once, ever since we both moved to the film school in either side of the country. I just noticed, it has been long since I had quality time with life-long friends. Not rushed time over coffee for an hour, or a quick walk in the park, or a quick phone call. Just a breather with a close friend.

When we got back from ice skating this afternoon, we watched 'Anastasia' the animation movie. One of my favorites. One of my dream roles. The music is amazing (by Ahrens & Flaherty). The main character is cool and brave and beautiful - she's one of my favorites princesses .. even though she's not Disney. ;) For our showcase, which we finish off this semester with in January, the teachers chose the song 'Journey to the past' for me to sing, out of all the 20 songs I've been working on these past 4 months.

To the movie we had our dinner, which was leftovers from the Christmas dinner: turkey sandwiches and split pea/ham soup. It was delicious. Best soup in a long time - I will remember to ask for the recipe from Jayne to put in my cook book. :)

The Bartz family has a parrot! It looks like my family's old parrot, Amos (one that was handed over to us when my Lydholm parents moved to Russia).

After dinner I made hot chocolate with mini marshmallows. Special, because I had been talking about wanting those mini marshmallows some time during the holiday, ever since I saw them at Walmart with the girls!
Glad to have another magical and cozy moment with the family today.

I am now sitting in the couch on Bekah's lap again, watching 'A Christmas story'. One I've never seen before, but it is a must-see for the Bartz, so we are all gathered together tonight again for this. :)

More cute animals!..

Their cat. Cutieee.

A puppy who was over for a day's visit.
David, Bekah's brother's fiancee brought this
to the Bartz house for Christmas, before giving her mum this present.
She was only 3 weeks old!

I am tired. I have been eating less today! But still more than I should...
Just before the movie, I was working out with Bekah. Lucy, Bekah's sister, was mean to Bekah and said she looked like a scarecrow, next to me - the swan. But we had fun and felt so good after burning some carbs!

Tomorrow morning we will be leaving for the grandma's house, but stopping on the way in Chicago. The trip is at least 8 hours long, so we will bring lots of movies.. and water. We will leave at 9 in the morning, so tonight we won't be going to sleep too late.

Sleep tight everyone. I hope you get to rest your tummies. I hope you get to relax.
Lots of love. X
